Grazing Land Productivity, Floral Diversity, and Management in a Semi-Arid Mediterranean Landscape

چکیده
Most grazing lands in Mediterranean ecosystems that support extensive sheep farming systems are characterized by unfavorable edapho-climatic conditions, especially semi-arid areas. Often, though, their use is far from sustainable, causing erosion and ecosystem degradation impacts. In this paper, we explore the use, productivity, flora diversity of typical four farms at Agra locality western part Lesvos Island, Greece. For a period two consecutive growing seasons (September to June), recorded herbage biomass on 16 plots with three measurements per season land cover plant productivity (biomass) inside small exclosures (cages) protected grazing. We species richness herbaceous communities within outside cages end every season, maximum growth species. also chemically analyzed for crude protein each season. Results show sizable differences among pasture as well an overall medium high degree considering relatively intensive grazing, little over different intensity. These results suggest “history” fields important, had been used arable crops past, those leveled favorable locations, were most productive diverse ones, while shallower soils inclined showed signs overuse degradation. Overall, these resilience despite use.

Plant Species and Functional Types’ Diversity in Relation to Grazing in Arid and Semi-arid Rangelands, Khabr National Park, Iran
In arid and semi-arid rangelands, grazing as one of the natural or human induced processes has direct and indirect effects on structure and dynamics of plant community and ecosystems. A study was done to analyze the effects of grazing on plant species diversity and Plant Functional Types‘ (PFTs) diversity of arid and semi-arid rangelands. We analyzed plant richness and diversity data from 75 sa...
متن کاملThe Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran
Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...

Three grass species, Agropyron desertorum (Agde) and Agropyron elongatum (Agel) and recently, Bromus tomentellus (Brto) are mainly used for range improvement as mixed seeding in semi-arid areas of Iran. Because there is little information about management of these grasses, this study was conducted at the Sisab Research Station in northern Iran to evaluate their responses to grazing management a...

Plasma calcium in all animals was not affected by the physiologic state and gende...
متن کاملVegetation Dynamics in Relation to Grazing Management Practices in Semi-arid Grazing Lands of Makueni County, Kenya
Livestock grazing practices in rangelands are being recognized as management tool for environmental protection and increased livestock productivity. Continuous grazing has been largely reported to reduce pasture productivity and increase environmental degradation. Rotational grazing is an alternative to continuous grazing and is considered to reduce negative environmental effects and provide qu...
